As the name would suggest, the area once was home to several slaughter houses and meat packing plants. But all that’s changed. The neighborhood is bursting at the seams with exciting restaurants owned by celebrities and celebrity chefs alike, exclusive nightclubs and a variety of upscale boutiques you won’t find anywhere else.
Areas of Interest
You’re In It: The Meat Packing district isn’t very large. Its cobblestone streets run roughly from West 14th Street south to Gansevoort Street, and from the Hudson River east to Hudson Street. The Highline (explained on the Chelsea neighborhood page) also stretches down to the Meat Packing District. A full list of galleries, restaurants, and bars can be found at: www.meatpacking-district.com.
Select Nightlife Establishments
The Meat Packing District has a very vibrant gay nightlife but there is not a single “gay bar.” Therefore the scene changes often. The Park and Cielo have a fairly gay clientele and gay nights but if you want a full listing of gay parties in the area, we recommend you visit Next Magazine’s website.
